One question I see often on the ‘Net is “Is it worth my time to earn a CCNA / CCNP / CCIE certification?” My personal answer to that is a resounding yes. The power of Cisco certifications has allowed me to create a tremendous career, and they can do the same for you.

There has never been a better time to accelerate your IT career, and earning a technical certification is a great way to do just that. I don’t care if you’re looking at earning an MCSE, a Cisco certification, Red Hat, or any other vendor – you are always better off having a technical certification than not having one. Technical certifications are an excellent way to market yourself and stand out from the crowd. Earning certifications shows a potential employer (and your current one) that you are willing to go the extra mile.

Sadly, when you ask this question on most Internet message boards, you’re going to get some very negative people giving you their “unbiased” opinion. Ask yourself this question: Do you want to entrust the direction of your career to someone you don’t know, has no accountability for what they say, and has some kind of ax to grind? Do you want someone like that to decide whether you should earn a CCNA or CCNP?

I can speak from experience on this point. When I told a few people that I was going to earn my CCIE, almost 100% of the responses I got were negative. “It’s too hard”, “no one can pass that”, “the CCIE isn’t worth the work”, etc. Every single one of these statements is false, and again I speak from firsthand experience. The same is true for the CCNA, CCNP, and MCSE. All of these certifications can add value to your career and put more money in your pocket. But you have to make the decision to earn them and to “keep your goals away from the trolls”.

Don’t ask anonymous strangers whether it’s “worth the time” to get a CCNA, MCSE, or other computer certification. The only person you should ask that question of is yourself. Whether you want to start an IT career or jumpstart your current one, make the decision to move forward in your career – and then follow through on that decision.

When you’re putting your CCNA and/or CCNP home lab together, you’re not just buying routers and switches you’re creating a blueprint for success. There is no better way to learn about how real Cisco routers and switches work than to work with the real thing!

Of course, it’s not enough to just get the routers and switches you’ve got to have the right cables and other devices to allow them to communicate. Let’s take a look at the different cables and connectors you need to know about when putting together your CCNA and CCNP home labs.

The basic cable you’ll need is a straight-through cable. These are used to connect your switches and routers also, if you have an ISDN simulator, you’ll need a straight-through cable to connect the router’s BRI interface to the simulator.

A more specialized cable type is the DTE/DCE cable. If you plan to use the serial interfaces on your routers (and you certainly should be!), you’ll need some of these cables. To connect two routers directly via their serial interfaces, you must have a DTE/DCE cable. (If you have a Cisco router set up as a frame relay switch, you’ll need more of these cables.)

If you have multiple switches, you’ll want to connect these switches in order to create a trunk line and possibly an Etherchannel. To successfully create a trunk between two switches, you’ll need crossover cables.

To connect your PC directly to the router or switch you’re configuring, you’ll need a rollover cable, also referred to as a rolled cable. This cable has an Rj-45 connector on one end and DB-9 connector on the other.

Once you’ve added multiple routers and switches to your CCNA / CCNP home lab, you’ll get tired of moving that rolled cable around. An access server (a special model of Cisco router, actually) will allow you to connect the rolled cable to it and communicate with all your devices via that connection. To use an access server, you’ll need an octal cable. This unusual cable has a large serial connector on one end (this won’t fit just any serial interface, so when purchasing an access server, make sure to get the right type of Cisco router) and has eight separate RJ-45 connectors at the other end.

The best news of all for all CCNA and CCNP candidates is that like used routers and switches, all these cables are affordable. You can find vendors that sell these cables on ebay and through search engines, and the odds are that the vendor that sold you your lab equipment also sells these cables. This also gives you first-hand experience in cabling your own lab – and that is the best exam preparation of all! (Multiple-choice questions on cable types are easy when you’ve actually worked with them!)

Candidates preparing to pass the CCNP exams are putting together Cisco home labs like never before. With CCNA and CCNP home lab equipment more affordable than ever, candidates have realized the importance of working on real Cisco routers and switches on the way to earning their certifications.

One question I get often from CCNP candidates is goes something like this: “I’m planning on pursuing the CCIE after I get my CCNP. What kind of routers and switches should I buy now in order to use the same equipment in my CCIE home lab?”

This is going to sound strange coming from me, because I’m the #1 proponent of CCNA and CCNP candidates buying their own home labs. When it comes to the CCIE, though, I have to say that you’re probably better off using rack rentals instead of investing big money now to buy more expensive equipment with which to earn your CCNP.

There are plenty of 2500 and 2600 routers out there that you can buy to prepare fully for your CCNA and CCNP exams that may not have the capability needed for IE preparation. (For instance, while 2500 routers are fantastic for CCNA and NP study, they shouldn’t be used for IE study.) The issue with buying more expensive equipment is that Cisco rightfully updates the CCIE lab equipment list twice a year, and these moves can prove very costly for those who get caught in the middle of these changes.

Let me give you an example that I lived through myself. When I began pursuing the CCIE, Catalyst switches were in use in the lab. I had a Cat 5000 that I used for practice. When I was in the middle of my preparation, Cisco introduced L3 switched to the lab in the form of TWO 3550 switches. Not only was the Cat now almost useless for IE study, the new switches went for about $5500 apiece, so if I wanted to keep up with the new lab changes, it was going to cost me $11,000.

Again, I know that it’s vitally important for today’s CCNA and CCNP candidates to get hands-on experience with home labs. It’s also great to think ahead when you’re earning your CCNP, and pursuing the CCIE is one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Just keep this regular CCIE lab update in mind. I recommend that you keep your CCNP budget down while not investing in more expensive routers with the IE in mind, and wait until you have passed the CCNP and are actively engaged in CCIE study before making the decision between rack rentals and putting together your own IE lab.
