A funeral is a family (or a State) ceremony held to honour a deceased person. It involves many rites and rituals that are specific to the culture of the deceased.
Generally at the Christian funerals, the rituals can be categorized under three broad heads – visitation, funeral and lastly, the burial. The visitation and funeral parts have greater importance from the point of view of rituals and have been detailed here.
Visitation is the part that comes first, when the deceased’s body is put in a coffin for the family and friends to see. The body is dressed up in the finest attire and any jewellery that belonged to the person who has died. Some communities follow the ritual of embalming the body, though not all cultures are bound to do it.
Visitation often includes a visual display of photographs of the dead person by the family members or a display of items that were valued by the departed while he was alive. Some families also play a slide show or video of the deceased.
This ceremony is then followed by the funeral, which is a memorial service that is usually held at the church. The casket is then brought to the church in a hearse and the family and friends of the departed follow the hearse. The coffin with its floral decoration is then placed inside the church.
This entails offering of prayers by the mourners and reading out of the Bible or other sacred texts by the priests. Religious songs are also sung in chorus by the attendees. This is followed by a comforting speech delivered by the pastor presiding over the proceedings of the funeral and eulogies by the friends and relatives, who then share their personal thoughts about the deceased’s life. Sometimes, attendees are permitted to see the body for the last time before it is taken for burial. The service might begin and end by ringing of church bells.
Once the first two services are over, the body is taken into a vehicle for burial that comprises the last phase of the rituals.
